Registration Has Open For The UC Cooperative Extension Mendocino County
John Harper's 2025 Wool Classing School
APRIL 9-11, 2025

The UCCE Wool Classing School was created by UCCE Livestock & Natural Resources Advisor John M. Harper almost 30 years ago and has been hosted at many venues. For many years, the venue was at the Hopland Research & Extension Center but now is back on private ranches. This year's school will be in beautiful and rustic Ukiah, California and Clearlake Oaks, California.

The dates are April 9-11, 2025, from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Location: UCCE Mendocino Ukiah, CA and Clearlake Oaks, CA 95423.

Class will be held at UCCE Mendocino, Ukiah, CA for classroom and at Clearlake Oaks, CA 95423 for shearing site.

Become a Wool Classer who can assist in improving the quality of the domestic wool clip in the U.S Sheep Industry. This course will teach you on wool fiber growth, measurement of wool, genetic selection programs, wool contamination, handling practices and packaging, labeling, and marketing. As the American Wool Industry is becoming more competitive get the skills to improve your understanding of wool to help with both domestic and international markets .

Get ready to work with experienced wool classers from the American Sheep Industry Association who work with producers in most of the western states during shearing season and handles a wide variety of wool.

The classing school is a 3-day program focusing on wool education, handling wool and classing (sorting) commercial wool. While anyone can find education in this program, it is geared to students interested in classing their own commercial wool clips, working on a shearing crew, or wanting to be a professional classer. The school includes both classroom sessions and hands-on portions at a shearing. A Wool Classer certificate is available through this course.

Due to how popular our wool classing school is, when we open registration on March 21, 2025, at 3pm PST, it is on a first come, first in basis. We, however, do give preference to California and Mendocino/Lake County residents.
