Sheep Shearing and Basic Care 101 and Technique Refinement 2025

You have reached the application for Sheep Shearing and Basic Care 101 OR Shearing Technique Refinement, Spring 2025, at the UC Hopland Research and Extension Center. Please complete the survey below to make your application. We use a slightly different system from the first come, first served model. Please read through the timeline below to ensure you understand the process and important dates:

Sheep Shearing and Basic Care 101: April 11-17

Shearing Technique Refinement: April 17-20

Please apply for only one class, if you are unsure which class will meet your needs, read through the full class information, or contact us (see below).
Applications will start being accepted: December 10, 2024 at 5pm.
Applications will stop being accepted: February 7, 2025 at 5pm.
Applicants will be notified of acceptance status by end of day Februrary 20.
Payment must be made by successful applicants by March 6, or your place will be offered to another applicant.

Priority will be given to applicants who are current or aspiring sheep shearers.

Cost:

Sheep Shearing and Basic Care 101:
Equity pricing allows participants to pay between $350-$1,200 at a level that is appropriate for their personal budget.
Shearing Technique Refinement: Equity pricing allows participants to pay between $200-$600 at a level that is appropriate for their personal budget.

Two scholarships are available for each class (just $50 payment required) and flexible equity pricing options are made possible due to the generous support of Fibershed. Please ensure you complete the scholarship questions or flexible pricing fields if you are interested in taking advantage of this support.

Co-ed dormitory style housing is available for additional $20 per night, bunkhouse style. Other private housing options are available for additional cost. This can be arranged once acceptance is confirmed.

Sheep Shearing and Basic Care 101: Minimum $350 - Full Cost $1,200
Technique Refinement: Minimum $200- Full Cost $600 

The Hopland Research and Extension Center is committed to building an inclusive community. Equity pricing serves the community better and allows us to recover the costs of this class. 

Each class has a full cost, which covers our expenses, and a sliding scale with a minimum cost if you are unable to pay full cost due to low income or extenuating circumstances. No payment is required at this time, but please indicate the amount you would be able to pay if you were offered a place on the class.

To assist you in determining an appropriate payment amount for your circumstances, 2024 Mendocino County U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development low income indicator data is provided as guidance.

SCHOLARSHIP
To apply for a scholarship courtesy of Fibershed, reducing the cost of the class to just $50, please complete the below questions. We will contact successful scholarship recipients on February 20.
