Elkus Ranch School Field Trip Request (Kindergarten - 12th Grade)

To be read by K-12 teachers before submitting answers to the registration questrions below.

Environmental Education Field Trips at Elkus Ranch for K-12 school-aged students provide a hands-on opportunity to learn about the production of food and fiber, the inter-relationships of plants, animals and humans, while emphasizing the importance of environmental stewardship.

While brushing a goat, petting our donkeys, viewing our chickens, or exploring our bone and fossil collection in our historic lower barn; students learn about adaptations, predator/prey relationships and food chains.

In the equally historic upper barn, students see the horses and meet our flock of sheep then learn how wool is spun into yarn. A demonstration of carding and spinning wool encourages students to consider where their clothing comes from.

In the garden or greenhouse, students learn about the function of roots, stems, leaves, flowers and seeds.  They taste different parts of seasonal plants, identify pollinators, and learn about seed dispersal and composting.  Plus, they get to plant their own seed or seedling to take home and nurture.

The Ranch Field Trip tours run from 10am to 1pm for grades K-12

  • $12 per student and chaperone. School staff are always free.
  • Please note, for K-12 classes we prefer to limit our numbers to three chaperones per class. School staff are free.
  • Up to three classes can participate in a field trip at the same time.
  • Classes can arrive as early as 9:30am for students to have bio-breaks and start their snack prior to the tour.
