We invite you to the first annual field day at the UC Merced Smart Farm Regenerative Almond Orchard demonstration site . The purpose of the field day is to present, demonstrate, and discuss options for planting a new almond orchard using regenerative practices.
We describe regenerative in this space as an integrated approach to farming and ranching rooted in principles and theories of ecology aimed at achieving conservation based outcomes including but not limited to soil health, biodiversity, water conservation, and overall ecosystem resilience.
The field day will showcase orchard establishment with minimal soil disturbance, compost and biochar application, cover crops, and more. You will also hear about current research findings in regenerative almond orchards.
In the afternoon, presentations will be given on the following topics:
1) Infiltration and groundwater recharge
2) Climate Smart CDFA incentives
3) Cover crops selection
4) Orchard recycling
5) Existing research and knowledge on mite control
6) Hedge row presentation and practical
Lunch will be provided.
Please contact Sara Rosenberg, Regenerative Agriculture Farm Advisor srosenberg@ucanr.edu, or Cameron Zuber Orchards Advisor Cazuber@ucanr.edu if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you there.
